Beneath the Earth’s crust, hundreds or even thousands of meters below the surface—without light, air, and with very limited water—scientists have discovered an immense biodiversity of microorganisms thriving under extreme conditions in pores and cracks of solid rock. This dark biosphere challenges everything we thought we knew, prompting us to rethink not only the origins and evolution of life on Earth but also the potential for its existence throughout the universe.
